The emotion completely caught me off guard in this book.
We start with another FMC wasting away in the cold by herself and then BAM – her savior comes and he says “I found you” incredulously.
I’m already thinking…what does THAT mean??
I’m the type of reader who will read into tiny details and definitely try to figure out the twist before it’s revealed. Idk what that says about me. Is that a part of being ADHD? Hyper vigilance? Hating surprises? All of the above probably. Regardless, I WANT TO KNOW.
So I’m thinking wow, he was searching for her…why? And the entire book in the back of my head I’m thinking WHY WHY WHY OMG WHYYYYYYY and this is the sign to me of a good book. A well written hidden twist that keeps me coming back and makes me GOBBLE up a book.
If this exists in a book, I’m all in.
It’s revealed that the man, Gavin, has a wife. Our FMC then battles with her feelings for him out of guilt because he doesn’t say his wife is gone or dead, just lost. which is already heartbreaking. There’s tension. There’s yearning on both sides. And there’s feelings of guilt everywhere.
When the reveal finally hits us, my brain has been saying “it’s you!! YOU’RE THE WIFE!!!!” for like 10 chapters. I hate when characters miss the obvious clues. Girl, he knew you hated coffee and brought you tea without you saying a word?? He said “I know everything about you”.
He also looks at you with YEARNING and love and LONGING. He will not leave you alone, as though he cannot exist without being near you.
Hmmmm. Duh??? The only way for that to not be super creepy is if he’s your husband and you just don’t remember him.
But, I am a mid 30s housewife, not a starving 20 year old girl with no family alone in a cabin. Soooooo I’ll let it slide.
Amidst all this romance, we also have a villain trying to ruin the world and a terrible uncle who erased her memories because her power was too strong and no one knew how to help her control it. Classic.
I feel so partnered with her in frustration because there are a lot of unanswered questions. and NO ONE WILL TELL HER.
400 YEARS she was in stassis. Where was she kept? Why did she have dreams of being stuck in a glass case? Was she somewhat conscious for part of it?
There’s a scar on her abdomen and her “mom” tells her it’s from a growth she had removed as a child. A growth?? Seriously??? IS THERE A CHILD SOMEWHERE?? Who is it? Would they be dead since it’s been 400 years? If the magic runs in the bloodline, would they have it? Are they immortal?? Omg. LJ!!!!
Will we ever get to the caves? Are they even real??
I’m holding out hope that somehow she’ll get her memories of Gavin and her mother back.
Who is her father? Is he actually dead? We kept hearing that Molochai killed him, but I’m not convinced. Nothing is brought up that often without a reason…
Oh, and where the heck IS Simeon?? He all of a sudden thinks he can help her with her magic now that it’s 400 years in the future? What did he learn? Where did he learn it from?
WHERE IS THE MAGIC FROM??

I love that the main plotline of this book is the romance + her figuring out who she is after her memory is wiped. It is sooooo heartbreaking. I have never felt so emotionally tied to an MMC before. I just hate it for him.
